Purpose of DP Vessel Maintainer Course (DPVM)

Essential Information

Prerequisites:

Minimum qualifications as per STCW Regulation III/1 – III/2 – III/3 – III/6 for engineers and technical officers; alternatively, case-by-case approval by The Nautical Institute. Shore-based technical staff may attend the theory portion for a certificate of completion (Theory Only).

Who is it for?

Ideal for technical staff such as engineers and electro-technical officers (ETOs) on DP vessels, as well as relevant shore-based technical personnel aiming to enhance their DP knowledge.

Assessment:

Participants complete an online assessment by The Nautical Institute and a practical evaluation at the training centre. Successful completion results in the issuance of a Key Technical DP Personnel Certificate.

Certification:

Certificate validity depends on sea time, with options for revalidation courses if DP-specific sea time requirements are met.

Course content

General Overview of DP Systems:

Introduction to Dynamic Positioning concepts, regulatory standards, and operational principles.

Power Generation and Management:

Understanding power generation systems and the critical role of power management for safe DP operations.

Propulsion Units and Position Reference Systems:

In-depth study of propulsion units, DP control systems, and position reference systems used in DP operations.

DP System Documentation and Safety Protocols:

Training on the documentation required for DP operations, including CAM, ASOG, TAM, and TAGOS.

Fault Finding and Redundancy Planning:

Practical fault-finding techniques, focusing on equipment redundancy and system integrity.

Simulator-Based Practical Exercises:

Hands-on sessions in a Class A simulator, applying technical skills in simulated DP environments.
