Purpose of Dynamic Positioning (DP) Refresher & Competency Assessment Course - Drilling

Essential Information

01

Prerequisites:

A valid Dynamic Positioning Operator (DPO) Certificate issued by the Nautical Institute. The original certificate, along with an NI or IMCA logbook, must be presented upon course enrolment.

02

Who is it for?

This course is intended for certified DPOs in the drilling sector needing revalidation or assessment to renew their DP certification.

03

Assessment:

The participants are individually assessed, in two steps, at the end of the course.

  • Theoretically; by means of the NI Revalidation online examination, which consists of a 30 question multiple choice test. 70 % correct to pass test.
  • Practically; by means of an individual simulator exercise where student will be assessed according to NI Annex F – DP revalidation Course-V2 28/01/2019

04

Certification:

Upon completion, participants earn an NI-recognised certificate valid for one year, within which the revalidation application must be submitted to NI.

Course Content

DP System Fundamentals:

Reviewing the DP system's working principles, including control loops, DP control stations, and key operational parameters.

Position Reference and Sensor Data Management:

Examining the role of position reference systems (PRS), sensors, and error mitigation in ensuring accuracy and reliability.

Power and Thruster Management:

Understanding power generation, distribution methods, thruster operations, and failure modes crucial to DP reliability in drilling units.

Environmental Factors and Operational Planning:

Addressing environmental impacts, such as current and wind, and applying WSOG, CAM (Consequence Analysis Mode), and TAM (Task Analysis Mode) for risk-based operational planning.

Regulatory Compliance and Redundancy Concepts:

Refreshing knowledge on DP equipment classes, redundancy concepts, and the FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) process according to the latest industry standards.

Practical Simulator Exercises:

Engaging in realistic DP failure and contingency scenarios in simulators, including mono-hull and semi-submersible drilling units, to apply theoretical knowledge in practice.

How it works

  • Step 1

Identify the specific training modules for your desired role and decide if you want on-site training or a mix of digital and on-site (blended).
  • Step 2
