Who is it for?

  • This course targets members of the bridge team (deck and engine officers) involved in anchor handling and dynamic positioning operations on board vessels
  • Secondarily, project managers, tow masters etc. may benefit from the training, if they are looking to be introduced to anchor handling and dynamic positioning operations.

Prerequisites

  • Participants must have competence as watch-keeping deck- or engine officer.
  • It is also recommended that participants have previously attended either a DP Induction or DP Familiarisation Course.
  • Full DP certification is not required.

Assessment Type

There will be no assessment upon completion of the course. The content will however be included in the final assessment on completion of Anchor Handling Advanced.

Certification

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate in Anchor Handling & Dynamic Positioning Fundamentals, recognized by maritime industry organizations and employers.

Course Content

The course covers the following key areas

Company and industrial procedure training

Understanding of AH and DP operations, including GOMO guidelines.

Planning and risk assessment:

Techniques for assessing risks and planning fundamental AH and DP operations.

Basic winch operations

Familiarity with winch functions, layouts, and computer systems for safe operation.

Safe use of anchor handling equipment

Instruction on using Triplex shark jaws, wires, and other essential tools safely.

Anchor systems and PCP

Introduction to running and retrieving anchors with Primary Control Points (PCP).

Communication and teamwork

Emphasising effective coordination between commanding officers, winch operators, bridge, rig, and deck teams.

Simulator-based exercises

Hands-on practice of ship handling, winch operations, problem-solving, and decision-making under simulated conditions.
