Scott Minaldi: safeguarding the skies and seas through training
November 2024

The sound of helicopters and the sight of open water are constants in Scott Minaldi’s life. But instead of piloting the aircraft, as he did for over 30 years, Scott now stands on the ground, equipping others with the knowledge and skills to stay safe in high-stakes environments. “Working here fits perfectly with the goals I set for myself after retirement,” he explains. “The importance of our courses keeps me motivated every day.”
Scott’s journey to Maersk Training began years ago when he attended a Helicopter Underwater Egress Training (HUET) course at the Robert Training Centre (RTC). “I was impressed with the facility and the training,” he recalls. “It left me thinking that working here would be the ideal post-military retirement role.” That impression stayed with him, and after a career defined by aviation safety, Scott found the perfect opportunity to join the team.

A mission grounded in safety
Scott’s career is rooted in a remarkable 30 years of aviation expertise. As a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Marine Corps, he served as Commanding Officer for a Marine Helicopter Squadron, lead flight instructor, and safety officer. During two tours with the Presidential Helicopter Squadron, Scott co-piloted missions for three U.S. presidents, while also leading operational test programmes for cutting-edge aviation technology.
After retiring from the military, he continued his dedication to safety as an air ambulance helicopter pilot. With over 750 hours flying a Eurocopter EC-135, he safely transported more than 550 critically ill or injured patients to trauma centres. This deep commitment to safety made his transition to Maersk Training seamless.
At Maersk Training, Scott oversees aviation courses that meet the rigorous standards of OPITO and offshore energy industries, while also assisting with maritime and water survival courses like THUET and BOSIET. “I was a career helicopter pilot, so transitioning to safety training felt like a natural step,” he says. “I’m motivated by knowing that our courses make a real difference.”
Innovating for impact
Scott’s impact isn’t limited to the classroom. He has driven innovation by developing specialised courses, including the OPITO Helideck Operations Initial Training (HOIT) programme and tailored courses for clients such as Shell, Chevron, and OXY Aviation. “Developing these courses, piloting them, and seeing them approved by major players in the industry has been incredibly rewarding,” he explains. These bespoke offerings showcase Maersk Training’s ability to adapt to evolving industry needs while maintaining the highest standards.
Teamwork makes the difference
At the RTC, instructors are more than just colleagues—they’re a close-knit team that works together across disciplines. “Our instructors are qualified to teach most of the courses we offer, so we’re constantly collaborating,” Scott explains. This teamwork ensures that every programme benefits from a wealth of experience and expertise.
It’s not just about the logistics, though. For Scott, the highlight of his work is seeing the impact of his efforts on students. “Hearing someone say, ‘this is the best training I’ve ever been a part of,’ reminds me why I do this,” he reflects.
A culture of growth and professionalism
For Scott, Maersk Training’s culture sets it apart. “The organisation demands professionalism, competence, growth, and care for others,” he says. These values resonate deeply with Scott, who believes they’re essential for continued success in the energy sector.
Looking ahead, Scott is confident about the future of safety training. “As long as we provide valued products at competitive rates, we’ll remain a vital resource for the offshore industry,” he predicts. With safety always a priority, he’s excited to continue innovating and delivering top-tier training solutions.
Advice for aspiring safety leaders
Scott’s advice to those considering a career at Maersk Training is rooted in his own experience. “If you’re passionate about minimising risk, preventing harm, and contributing to industrial safety, this is the perfect place for you,” he says.
His own career, from helicopter pilot to safety trainer, is a testament to the value of that passion. Whether he’s creating a new course, guiding a team of instructors, or handing a certificate to a successful graduate, Scott is living his mission of safeguarding lives—one training participant at a time.
