Shaping the Future of Training: A Conversation with Amal Joy, Product Owner for Immersive Technologies at Maersk Training
October 2024

For Amal Joy, the path to Maersk Training wasn’t just a career move—it was a natural progression of his passion for innovation and industry excellence. After spending five years in Maersk's logistics division, he had already gained a deep respect for the brand’s commitment to pushing boundaries. But it wasn’t until he stepped into his current role at Maersk Training that he truly found his calling.
“I was inspired by the opportunity to dive deeper into how major industries like Maritime and Oil & Gas operate, especially when it comes to addressing the real-world challenges they face,” Amal explains. “Working with seasoned professionals and creating solutions that directly impact these sectors felt incredibly rewarding to me.”
Now, as the Product Owner for Immersive Technologies, Amal is leading the charge in revolutionizing training through cutting-edge tools like augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR). But his day-to-day isn’t just about tech—it’s about making real, tangible changes in the industries that keep the world moving.
Immersive Technologies: Building a Safer, Smarter Future
Amal oversees a team of XR (extended reality) designers and developers, all working toward one goal: creating immersive training solutions that enhance safety, efficiency, and preparedness in high-risk industries. His role involves everything from overseeing the design of AR/VR training modules to ensuring these products meet the specific needs of sectors like Maritime, Oil & Gas, Wind, and Crisis Management.
“I’m passionate about how VR and AR can improve training in such critical fields,” he says. “When you’re working in industries where mistakes can be costly—or even life-threatening—having immersive, realistic training can make all the difference.”
A recent project that highlights this impact is the development of the GWO BTT (Basic Technical Training) VR module. Amal and his team went above and beyond to ensure the module wasn’t just another training tool, but an accurate, deeply immersive experience. “We visited the actual training locations and took part in real-world sessions,” Amal recalls. “This hands-on approach allowed us to recreate the environment in VR with an unparalleled level of detail and authenticity.”
Collaboration and Cross-Functionality: Key to Success
One of the things Amal values most about working at Maersk Training is the collaborative culture. In his role, working cross-functionally is not only encouraged—it’s essential. He regularly liaises with various departments to ensure that the immersive products his team creates are both practical and aligned with client needs.
“I frequently collaborate with the commercial team to understand what our clients are looking for,” he notes. “And I work closely with training instructors and subject matter experts to ensure the content we develop is accurate and applicable in real-world settings.”
Amal’s work also requires tight coordination with IT and infrastructure teams to ensure seamless technical implementation. “Creating innovative training solutions isn’t just about the tech—it’s about making sure it integrates smoothly and delivers real value.”
A Day in the Life of a Product Owner
When asked what a typical day looks like for him, Amal laughs. “There’s no such thing as a typical day in my role—it’s always dynamic.”
Mornings usually begin with a team stand-up meeting, where he touches base with the XR designers and developers to check on project progress and address any roadblocks. “From there, it’s all about coordination—gathering feedback from stakeholders, reviewing prototypes, testing VR/AR modules, and planning future developments,” he says.
Amal’s favorite part of the day? Brainstorming new ideas. “There’s always something exciting about coming together with the team to push the boundaries of what’s possible.”
Staying Passionate in a Fast-Paced Role
In an industry that’s constantly evolving, Amal finds his motivation in the tangible impact his work has on safety and efficiency. “Knowing that we’re building solutions that can truly make a difference in industries like Maritime and Oil & Gas keeps me going,” he says. “Plus, the rapid advancements in XR technologies make every day feel like a new adventure.”
Working at the intersection of technology and purpose is what drives Amal and his team to continuously innovate. “The blend of tech and real-world impact is incredibly powerful. It’s what makes Maersk Training such an exciting place to be.”
A Culture of Growth and Support
When it comes to professional growth, Amal is quick to credit the culture at Maersk Training.
“I’m encouraged to explore new ideas and push the boundaries. Knowing that I have the support of both leadership and my team allows me to take those risks,” he says.
The company’s commitment to cross-functional collaboration has also been a key factor in his development. “I’ve had the chance to work with different departments and learn from professionals across various industries. That’s helped me grow not only as a leader but as a collaborator.”
Looking Ahead: The Future of Immersive Training
As for what the future holds, Amal is optimistic. With advancements in AR and VR technologies, he believes the training landscape will continue to evolve, offering even more personalized, realistic experiences.
“We’re on the verge of creating training modules that are more interactive, tailored to specific industries, and even more effective with the integration of AI,” he says.
Looking further ahead, Amal sees Maersk Training playing an increasingly vital role in helping industries like Maritime and Oil & Gas embrace digital transformation. “Our ability to provide innovative, safety-focused training solutions is going to be crucial as these industries continue to evolve.”
