Purpose of Offshore Crane Operator Stage 3 Re-assessment

Prerequisites:

Candidates must hold a valid Offshore Crane Operator Stage 3 certificate, completed within the last two years, and a fully completed logbook documenting a minimum of 50 hours of vessel-to-crane operation experience.

Who is it for?

This course is intended for certified offshore crane operators seeking to renew their Stage 3 qualification.

Assessment:

The re-assessment consists of a 75-question written exam with an 80% passing score, and a practical assessment with five lift scenarios. Candidates deemed "Not Yet Competent" (NYC) are eligible for one re-sit. A second NYC result requires a minimum 14-day waiting period for re-assessment.

Certification:

Upon successful completion, candidates receive a renewed Offshore Crane Operator Stage 3 certificate, demonstrating competency to perform unsupervised crane operations offshore.

Course content

Regulations and Safe Systems of Work:

Understanding key regulations (LOLER, BS7121-1, BS7121-11) and the responsibilities of a crane operator.

Crane Inspection and Checks:

Reviewing the necessary checks on crane equipment to ensure safety and operational readiness.

Crane Lifting Operations:

Assessing the ability to undertake standard and complex lifts in an offshore environment, with emphasis on safety and efficiency.

Responding to Malfunctions and Alarms:

Practical assessment of operator response to crane malfunctions and alarm situations, focusing on quick, safe, and effective problem resolution.

Simulator-Based Practical Exam:

Conducting five lift scenarios using a full-motion simulator to evaluate practical skills and decision-making in real-time.

Written Knowledge Exam:

Completion of a written examination covering essential knowledge areas, with a required passing score of 80% to qualify.
