Purpose
Dangerous goods are articles or substances which can pose a significant risk to health, safety, property or the environment when transported by sea.
This course provide the participants a fundamental understanding of rules and regulations for transportation of dangerous goods by sea, including identification and classification of goods, appropriate packing and labelling, and stowage and segregation. Thus allow them to safe and efficient perform their duties regarding handling of dangerous goods in both daily operations and emergency situations.

- Regulations governing transport of dangerous goods by sea (IMO: IMDG, SOLAS and MARPOL)
- Classification of dangerous goods and identification of proper shipping name
- Packing groups and types of packing
- Marking, labelling and placarding of dangerous goods
- Stowage and segregation requirements
- Documents and documentation required
- The shippers responsibility
- Emergency procedures, incl use of UN numbers and the EmS guide
The course is written primarily with reference to the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) code. The course content is in accordance with the requirements of IMDG code, section 1.3.1.2.1.
Objectives
Upon completion the course you will be able to:
- Define, identify and classify dangerous goods
Identify legislation and regulations relevant to transport of dangerous goods by sea
- Demonstrate knowledge of requirements for shipping dangerous goods by sea, including packing and packing groups, labelling and required documentation
- Identify requirements for loading, stowage and segregation
- Identify emergency procedures and recall how to use them
