Purpose of Stability 1 (theory)

Essential information

01

Who is this for?

This course is ideal for:

  • MOU personnel involved in ballast control, stability management, and safety operations, including Ballast Control Operators.
  • Personnel working on self-elevating platforms (Jack-Ups) or other offshore structures who require a comprehensive understanding of stability principles.

02

Prerequisites

Participants should have:

  • No prior detailed knowledge of stability required, making this course suitable for beginners.

03

Assessment Type

Participants will be required to pass a written examination prior to the issue of a certificate.

04

Certification

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a certificate of completion, recognized by industry professionals and organizations.

Course Content

The course covers the following key areas:

Terminology

Familiarize yourself with key terms related to stability, ballast control, and hydrostatics. Understand the language used in stability management to communicate effectively in offshore operations.

States of Equilibrium

Learn about the different states of equilibrium (stable, neutral, unstable) and their impact on vessel safety. Explore the factors that influence equilibrium and how to achieve a balanced state.

Initial Stability

Understand the concept of initial stability, including the role of the metacentric height (GM). Study the relationship between the centre of gravity, buoyancy, and stability, and how to manage these elements in practice.

Longitudinal and Transverse Stability

Analyze how longitudinal and transverse stability affect vessel movement and safety. Learn to calculate stability under different loading conditions and during ballast adjustments.

Hydrostatics

Apply hydrostatic principles to perform essential stability calculations. Use hydrostatic data to evaluate stability curves, righting moments, and other stability indicators.

Evaluation

Assesses participants’ understanding and practical skills.
