Ship Handling for Large Vessels - Virtual
Purpose
The purpose of this course is to ensure that officers holding Certificates of Competency (COC), who are part of the bridge team on vessels exceeding 100,000 GRT, are adequately trained in handling and maneuvering these very large ships. In accordance with STCW Code Section B-V/a, the course equips participants with the skills necessary to manage the unique challenges associated with large vessels, including their extended stopping distances, high inertia, and sensitivity to environmental factors like wind, current, and shallow water effects. Through practical simulator exercises, participants will learn how to safely navigate, berth, and operate large vessels under various conditions, ensuring efficient and safe ship operations.
- Standard Manoeuvres & Handling of Large Vessels
- Effect of wind on high freeboard Ships

- Familiarize themselves with the use of engines and helm control for effective large vessel maneuvering.
- Understand key vessel characteristics such as turning circle, stopping distance, and pivot point, and how these affect maneuvering.
- Comprehend the impact of environmental factors—wind, current, shallow water, banks, narrow channels, and loading conditions—on the behavior of large vessels.
- Gain awareness of factors influencing safe berthing and unberthing operations, including the effects of wind, tide, and the use of tugs.
- Acquire knowledge in critical operations such as anchoring, mooring to single point moorings (SPMs), and berthing under varying conditions.
