Ship Handling and Manoeuvring - Virtual
Purpose
In line with STCW Regulations II/1 and II/2, Section A-II/1, A-II/2, and A-VIII/2, as well as Section B-V/a concerning manoeuvring and handling a ship in various conditions and establishing good teamwork during Bridge Watchkeeping and based on the guidelines of IMO Model Course 1.22 as ammended.
- Review of Basic Principles: Reinforcement of fundamental ship handling concepts.
- Standard Manoeuvres: Execution and mastery of key ship manoeuvres in varying conditions.
- Human Element & Cultural Awareness: Understanding the impact of human factors, attitude, and cultural differences on ship operations.
- Authority, Assertiveness, and Leadership: Developing effective leadership skills, assertive decision-making, and management of authority on board.
- Decision Making & Automation Awareness: Enhancing decision-making processes and understanding the role of automation in modern ship handling.
- Passage Planning: Comprehensive planning for safe and efficient voyages.
- Environmental Factors & Heavy Weather: Managing the effects of wind, current, shallow water, and narrow channels on ship handling.
- Anchoring and Mooring: Practical skills for anchoring, single buoy mooring, and handling berthing/unberthing operations.
- Berthing/Unberthing: Efficiently utilizing tugs and handling pilot pick-up during port operations.Crisis Management & Contingency Planning: Preparing for emergencies with effective crisis management and contingency planning strategies.
Objectives
By the end of this course participants will:
- Gain hands-on experience in handling ships under various conditions and contribute more effectively to the bridge team during normal and emergency manoeuvres.
- Continuously monitor the vessel's progress and make necessary adjustments to maintain a safe passage.
- Become familiar with the use of engines and helm for precise ship manoeuvring.
- Understand the effects of wind, current, shallow water, banks, narrow channels, and loading conditions on ship behaviour.
- Recognize the importance of thorough planning for passages and manoeuvres, including the need for contingency plans.
- Enhance bridge teamwork and procedures during watchkeeping and ship handling in normal and emergency situations.
- Develop and execute appropriate contingency actions when required.
- Identify the development of an error chain and take action to interrupt it.
- Eliminate bias in team interactions and foster an environment of collaboration.
- Understand the value of clear communication and the importance of building a shared mental model for the planned passage

Prerequisites Navigational Officer holding relevant certificate of competency.
