Purpose
The course aims to supplement the IGF Code mandatory trainings by addressing the specific training requirements stipulated in Chapter 16 of the Interim Guidelines for the Safety of Ships Using Methyl/Ethyl Alcohol as Fuel (Msc.1/Circ.1621).
Content
- Managing the risks of using methanol as marine fuel
- Design and construction of ships using methanol as fuel
- Methanol dual fuel engines
- Case study: Methanol dual fuel ship in operation
Handling of methanol fuel related failures.
Objectives
- Evaluate the inherent risks in the design, arrangement, operation, and maintenance of methanol fuel systems and implement suitable risk reducing measures to eliminate or mitigate the risk as necessary for the safety of the crew, the vessel, and the environment.
- Understand the regulatory framework of methanol as marine fuel focusing on the regulations promoting shipboard safety with methanol, seek the relevant provisions from the rules, particularly the Interim Guidelines for the Safety of Ships Using Methanol as Fuel, and verify compliance of shipboard systems and arrangement.
- Understand the working principles of a methanol dual fuel engine, identify its safety features, its methanol related components and auxiliary requirements, and assess its operational limitations.
- Apply operational knowledge of methanol fueled ships from actual shipboard and shore-based experiences of subject matter experts.
- Manage methanol fuel related failures safely and resolve problems in the methanol fuel system effectively.
