IWCF Drilling Well Control L3&4
Purpose of IWCF Well Control Level 3/4
The IWCF Well Control Level 3/4 Course is an advanced training program designed for drilling personnel and supervisors responsible for critical well control decisions during drilling and well intervention operations. This five-day course provides comprehensive training in well control principles, pressure control, kick detection, and shut-in procedures for both surface and subsea operations. Participants learn about advanced well control concepts, wellbore hydraulics, risk management, and well control equipment use.
Essential information
01
Prerequisites
Participants should have:
- A valid IWCF Level 2 certification or equivalent for Level 3, and Level 3 certification or equivalent for Level 4.
- Relevant experience in drilling or well intervention operations.
02
Who is it for?
This course is ideal for:
- Drilling personnel, such as drillers, assistant drillers, and tool pushers (Level 3).
- Supervisors, wellsite leaders, company men, and engineers responsible for overseeing well control operations (Level 4).
03
Assessment
Only one type of assessment is allowed for each candidate per session. To pass the assessment and get a certificate, candidates must achieve a minimum mark of 70% in each section of the assessment.
Each candidate is required to complete two written test papers which include multiple choice questions and Kill Sheet calculations.

About IWCFTraining in action: real-life well control scenarios
Here’s how IWCF training skills are applied in critical well control situations:
-
Early Detection of Gas Influx
A driller who completed IWCF Level 3 training successfully managed a well control situation on a deep-water drilling rig. By detecting a gas influx early and applying the correct shut-in procedures, they prevented escalation. -
Coordinated Response to a Well Kick
A Level 4-trained supervisor effectively coordinated a response to a well kick during a subsea operation. By ensuring the rig crew followed proper procedures, they maintained well control and prevented a potential blowout.
These examples highlight the essential role of trained personnel in safely managing well control incidents.
