Purpose of GWO Basic Technical Training (BTT)

Prerequisites

Participants should have:

  • A basic understanding of wind turbine components and general safety practices.
  • Physical fitness to participate in hands-on training exercises.

This course is ideal for:

  • New entrants to the wind energy sector, including technicians, engineers, and maintenance personnel.
  • Wind turbine professionals looking to enhance their technical skills and knowledge.

Assessment

Practical and theoretical assessments, including skill demonstrations and tool usage.

Certification

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a GWO Basic Technical Training certificate. GWO Basic Technical Training itself does not need to be renewed. It's considered a foundation course and unlike some other GWO safety training modules, the BTT has no expiry date.

Course content

The course covers the following key areas:

Mechanical module

Understanding mechanical systems in wind turbines, including gears, bearings, shafts, and braking systems, and learning maintenance and troubleshooting techniques.

Electrical module

Basics of electrical theory and safety, electrical components in wind turbines, electrical testing and fault-finding, and hands-on practice with electrical tools.

Hydraulic module

Overview of hydraulic systems used in wind turbines, including pumps, valves, and actuators, with practical training in maintenance and troubleshooting.

Bolt tightening module

Techniques for safe and effective bolt tightening, including the use of torque tools and understanding torque-tension relationships.

Safety protocols and procedures

Training in safety practices, such as lockout/tagout procedures, proper use of PPE, and emergency response for technical tasks.

Practical simulation exercises

Hands-on training using realistic scenarios to practice technical maintenance skills in a controlled environment.
