The course is designed for navigating officers with limited experience and knowledge in the Electronic Chart Display and Information System.
Purpose
The purpose is:
- To enhance the safety of navigation
- To train the officer in ECDIS onboard and to create awareness about the system limitations.
- To encourage the safe use of ECDIS in aggravated and in dangerous situations

Objective
At the end of the course the participant will be able to:
- Describe the contents of the IMO Performance Standard
- Explain the different between a ECS system and a ECDIS system
- Explain minimum requirement of ECDIS interfaces.
- Explain minimum requirement of ECDIS backup system
- Explain ECDIS limitations
- Maintain the ECDIS equipment according to manufacture’s description
- Do a correct start-up and set-up safety parameters
- Update chart by use of chart manager
- Make a route planning and validate the route for anti-grounding and special areas alarms
- Analyse and act on given alarms during route planning and under normal sailing conditions
- Differentiate between electronic charts and explain strengths and weaknesses of the different charts.
- Sort out and display relevant information with regards to the specific chart and area
- Use the ECDIS system together with other integrated navigational instruments as backup and control
An MCA approved course complying with STCW 95 Reg. ll/1 Table A-ll/1 "Plan and conduct a passage and determine position" meeting outcome 4 of MNTB navigation, radar and ARPA Simulator training.
This course is a generic ECDIS course whose content includes all required by IMO Model Course 1.27, and type specific ECDIS course for ships using Transas Navisailor 3000 ECDIS-I equipment.
An alternative ECDIS model, PC-Maritime's Navmaster, may be used on request for specific ship fittings and crew requirements.
There will be, for all courses, on successful completion, two certificates issued to the delegate, generic and type specific. Written and continual assessment will determine the delegates' success with this course.
Delegates will need to provide photographic proof of their identity to satisfy MCA requirements.
