Bridge Resource Management
Purpose
Human factors account for approximately 80% of accidents. This course's principal aim is to reduce the risk of accidents at sea with focus on casualty prevention and human error.
Contents
Having done the basic course, spent at least 30 days sea-going experience and had sufficient entries in the ‘Sea-going Familiarization Watch-Keeping Log’ you are almost there – after this you have to log up a further six months sea-going experience before you can get your certificate. Having ticked all the admission level boxes you will join a class of nine for five days where you will be instructed in practical and theoretical training by use of simulators which faithfully reproduce the situations you will encounter in you new role on board. The programme follows the Nautical Institute Scheme of Training which in turn follows the recommendations contained in The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) guidelines.
Objective
The objective is:
- To reduce the risk of accidents in the fleet, focusing on casualty prevention
- Through case studies and theory, make the officers aware of the human factors
- To train the officers in cooperation and the coordination of tasks and in the deployment of
resources in stressed and aggravated situations
- To create awareness about the different areas of responsibility and working situations with regard
to deck and engine
- To illustrate the possibilities in dual concept
- To use the simulators to train and observe and ensure that the officers keep a high standard of competence within the BRM principles
There will be no written evaluation to the Company or the participants.
