Offshore First Aid Refresher - Aberdeen


Purpose

The Offshore First Aid Refresher course is a HSE approved course that complies with the Offshore Installations and Pipeline Works (First Aid) Regulations 1989. Delegates that are trained in Offshore First Aid must complete this course within three years of first qualifying.

Content

The syllabus consists of 16 practical exercise, demonstration and lecture based modules:
  • Module 1 - Aims and principles of first aid
  • Module 2 - How to deal with burns and eye injuries
  • Module 3 - Assessment and treatment of common major and minor illnesses
  • Module 4 - How to deal with poisons encountered offshore
  • Module 5 - Record keeping and the use of first aid equipment
  • Module 6 - Management of the unconscious casualty
  • Module 7 - The ability to communicate effectively in an emergency
  • Module 8 - Safe use of Entonox
  • Module 9 - Treatment of inhalation and hot gasses or smoke
  • Module 10 - Treatment of injuries to bones, muscles and joints
  • Module 11 - Assessment and treatment of a casualty who is wounded, bleeding or shocked
  • Module 12 - Treatment of hypothermia, hyperthermia and the effects of immersion
  • Module 13 - Personal hygiene and the prevention of cross-infection during first aid procedures
  • Module 14 - The ability to transport a sick and injured patient safely and effectively by helicopter
  • Module 15 - Treatment of a casualty who is suffering from an injury, including the dressing and immobilisation of injured parts
  • Module 16 - Basic life support (CPR), including the use of defibrillators, the use and maintenance of manual resuscitators, manual suction devices, oropharyngeal airways and oxygen supplies

 

Objectives

On successful completion of the course and final assessment, the delegate will receive a HSE approved, nationally recognized First Aid at Work certificate. This requires to be revalidated every three years. All delegates will also receive a course pack which includes an up-to-date first aid manual.

Admission Requirements

All delegates that are trained in first aid must complete this course within three years of first qualifying.
