ELECTRICAL

Purpose

To train the personnel in practical knowledge of electrical machines, distribution and trouble shooting.

Content

Theory:

  • Dangers, Hazards, Risks and Basic Safety while working with Electricity
  • Revision of fundamentals of electricity
  • Construction, Operation & working principles of a generator including parallel operation
  • Layout of MSB and ESB and possible fault conditions
  • Switches, Isolators & Circuit breakers – operation, safety and maintenance
  • All types of Starters – components, operation
  • Circuit diagrams and understanding
  • Other electrical machines – Transformers etc.
  • All types of Motors – construction, operation and maintenance
  • Batteries – construction, principles and maintenance
  • Lamps – types, operation etc.
  • General Fault conditions and troubleshooting methodology
  • Control voltage supply, Cathodic protection etc.
  • Ingress protection, Temperature classification, Explosion proofing,
  • Working in an intrinsically safe environment and on intrinsically safe equipment

Practical:

  • Tracing various ship board electrical circuit diagrams
  • Use of Instruments such as multi-meter, tong tester, Insulation tester etc.
  • Study of various electrical equipments such as contactors, relays, timers etc.
  • Project wiring by participants, including different types of starters
  • Trouble shooting on different types of starters – DOL / Star-Delta / Reversible / Auto Start-Stop / Long-time / Auto-Transformer / Two-Speed etc.
  • Testing of Diodes, Transistors and Capacitors


 

Objectives

Upon completion of the course the participant will have:

  • A better understanding of electrical equipment
  • Confidence in understanding electric systems
  • The ability to handle the troubleshooting process in electric systems

Admission Requirements

This course is intended for all Marine engineers with limited knowledge of handling and troubleshooting electrical equipment.

 

Duration

Six days of lectures / discussions including hands-on practicals. The participants are exposed to intensive practical training, both, in actually wiring up several types of starters and also in troubleshooting faults induced in them. Extensive tracing of various different types of electrical circuits of shipboard machinery is carried out.

Maximum 12 participants per class.
