ECDIS - ELECTRONIC CHART DISPLAY and INFORMATION SYSTEM

 

 

 

Purpose

  • To enhance the safety of navigation
  • To train the officer in ECDIS on board and to create awareness about the system limitations
  • To encourage the safe use of ECDIS in aggravated and in dangerous situations

Objectives

Upon completion of the course the participant will have gained knowledge about:

  • The IMO performance standards for ECDIS
  • How the system works onboard, the interfaces and the backup systems
  • Limitations of the ECDIS, faults, potential dangers and safe use of the system
  • The use of different electronic charts (TX97, ENC, ARCS)

Additionally the participant will also be able to:

  • Maintain the ECDIS equipment
  • Correct start-up and initial settings and safety parameters
  • Route planning and validation of the route for possible dangers
  • Analyse and act on given alarms during route planning and under normal sailing conditions
  • Sort out and display relevant information according to the specific chart and area
  • Use the ECDIS together with other integrated navigational instruments as backup and control

 

Admission Requirements

This course is intended for Navigating officers with limited experience and knowledge in ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information System).

 

Duration

2 days of Lecture/Discussion including Simulator handling

Participants

Maximum 6 participants per class

Course shall be conducted in English
